Over the last few weeks, I have received lots of letters from users - and relatives of users - of the New Addington Pop In Centre. The centre is threatened with closure, having lost its grant from the Council. I appreciate the very difficult decisions the Council is having to take as part of its contribution to reducing the huge deficit Gordon Brown has left us with but this is a really important service for the people of New Addington and, along with Cllr Tony Pearson, I have been lobbying the Council to rethink its decision.
This morning I took an hour out from Mayday to visit the centre with Tony and give everyone the good news that we have had an assurance from the Leader of the Council, Mike Fisher, that the centre won't close. I am hugely grateful to the Council for this change of heart - as was everyone I spoke to today. Overall, the Conservative administration at the Town Hall is doing a good job in very difficult circumstances but, like anyone, they occasionally get things wrong and it is greatly to their credit that when they do they recognise it and put things right.
