John Lewis at home
02/07/2010 17:17:00

This afternoon, I had an opportunity to have a look round the new John Lewis at home store on the Purley Way, which is due to open on 26th August, with Council Leader Mike Fisher and Tim Harrison, Head of New Format Development at John Lewis.

In what has been an extremely difficult period for our national economy, I'm delighted that John Lewis has made the decision to open in Croydon - given the forthcoming reductions in public spending, it's vital that we encourage growth in the private sector. The £7.5 million that John Lewis are investing in our local economy will provide more than 200 jobs for local people.

John Lewis at home stores are not full department stores - they focus on furniture, furnishing accessories, homeware, electronic goods and home technology. But perhaps the most encouraging part of the whole visit was the news that John Lewis have deliberately chosen a building with a relatively short lease because long term they want to have a full department store in central Croydon.
