Two of the most common concerns people raised in the Residents' Survey that I conducted a few months ago were immigration and terrorism.
One of the things that the next Conservative Government needs to do to address those concerns is to strenghten our borders, which are literally our first line of defence.
At the moment, eleven separate agencies are responsible for this job, leading to confusion and duplication. What’s more, just sixteen of Britain’s hundreds of ports have round the clock security.
Earlier today, David Cameron published detailed proposals to set up a single Border Protection Service. Unlike Labour’s poor imitation, this force will have the power to stop, search, detain and prosecute those smugglers, terrorists, traffickers and illegal immigrants who currently slip through the net. And by improving co-ordination, we will be better able to provide the 24 hour security our major air and sea ports desperately need as well as a reliable presence at smaller ports and airstrips.
You can read the detailed proposals here.
