May is proving a good month for me as far as elections are concerned. I learnt this afternoon that I have been elected to the Executive of the 1922 Committee.
Being elected to represent my home town in Parliament was a huge honour, however, I am realistic enough to recognise that most people voted for me because I was the Conservative candidate rather than voting for me as an individual. Following David Cameron's very sensible recognition that Ministers should not take part, the electorate for this election was my fellow Conservative backbench MPs. It's nice to be chosen by your peers and I hope to use the position to make sure the new MPs' expenses system is workable and to champion a stronger role for backbenchers in Parliament.
