Croydon's new Mayor

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Annual Council meeting, at which Councillor Avril Slipper was elected as Mayor of the borough for the next municipal year (it felt strange being a guest at a Council meeting rather than a participant - when the Mayor asked councillors to confirm that their declarations of interest were up to date, I nearly joined in out of instinct).

Avril has been a councillor in Ashburton for over 20 years. She richly deserves the honour that was bestowed on her last night. During her acceptance speech, she asked each new councillor to stand and invited everyone to congratulate them in the traditional way, which I thought was a really nice touch.
