Remembering John Whitgift
19/03/2010 16:10:00

In 2006, I was appointed by the Council to be a Governor of the Whitgift Foundation. This morning, I attended the annual Founder's Day service to commemorate the day 414 years ago when Archbishop Whitgift laid the two foundation stones of his Hospital of the Holy Trinity, now known as the Almshouses.

Over the years, the Whitgift Foundation has made a huge contribution to the borough. I was lucky enough to be awarded a full scholarship to attend Trinity School and it is great to have the opportunity to give something back. Today the Foundation comprises three schools - Trinity, Whitgift and Old Palace of John Whitgift - and three care homes - the Almshouses, Whitgift House and Wilhelmina House - plus the Carers' Information Service. It is worth remembering that all of this is thanks to the vision and generosity of one man who wanted to provide care for the elderly and education for the young.
