Fox hunting
12/05/2017 22:42:00

I have received a fair few emails about fox hunting in the light of recent media coverage, so I thought it would be helpful to set out my position.

The Prime Minister has said that she will make time for a vote on whether to lift the ban on hunting with dogs if there is a demand for such a vote. This would be a 'free' vote - individual MPs would be able to make up their own minds free from any pressure from their party's whips.

David Cameron made the same promise before the last Election. In the event, there was no vote because hunting supporters canvassed opinion and found that they didn't have the votes to win and didn't want the embarrassment of losing. I expect the same would happen this time.

But if there were to be a vote I am clear which way I would vote. I have never hunted myself and find it hard to understand how people can take pleasure in killing wild animals. Moreover I’m clear from the hundreds of emails, letters and tweets I’ve received that the overwhelming majority of my constituents are opposed to lifting the ban. I would therefore vote against reversing the ban.

I spoke with Gavin in Wickham Road and he was very genuine in his views. I don't think the Prime Minister really has grasped the view of people that they are so against for hunting. I supported Gavin at the last election and i had made my mind up that i was not going to support him this time but after today i am supporting Gavin.

I have never protested in my life but if the PM does push this through i will be first on the march.
