I welcome yesterday’s announcement by the Department for Transport reducing the amount of time your train can be delayed before you are entitled to compensation from 30 minutes to 15 minutes.
The new scheme, known as Delay Repay 15, will initially be introduced on the Govia Thameslink franchise, which includes Southern, and then rolled out across the country. Customers will be able to claim 25% of the cost of the single fare for delays between 15 and 29 minutes. The existing Delay Repay thresholds will remain and are as follows:
• 50% of the single fare for delays of 30 to 59 minutes;
• 100% of the single fare for delays of 60 minutes or more;
• 100% of the return fare for delays of 2 hours or more.
The Government is quite right to start with our franchise given the misery commuters are currently experiencing, partly because of totally unjustified trade union action but also due to the failing of Govia Thameslink and Network Rail. Let's hope this financial incentive makes Southern raise their game!
