Today's Pre-Budget Report was an opportunity for the Government to finally confront the budget deficit - the biggest in Britain's peacetime history - caused by its addiction to spending our money coupled with the recession.
Instead, they decided to put their own political fortunes ahead of what is right for our country. Not only did they decide to carry on their irresponsible spending, but they're actually increasing it for one more year. Then, when the Election is out of the way, they're planning cuts.
For example, they're increasing benefits for some of the most vulnerable people in our country, like the disabled - then planning to cut them the year after the election. It's this kind of cynicism that puts people off politics.
What we needed today was a plan to get this country back in the black. Such a plan is going to involve cuts in government spending and some tax rises. That's not going to be very popular but telling people the truth might at least begin the process of winning back their respect.
