Since Croydon Council started charging for the kerbside collection of garden waste, the queues at our recycling centres - Factory Lane in central Croydon, Fishers Farm in New Addington and Purley Oaks in Purley - have got much longer. When they get really busy, the long tailbacks cause traffic chaos around the three sites.
Local Conservatives are calling on the Council to extend the opening hours at these three centres during the times of the year when people have large volumes of garden waste to recycle. If we want people to do the right thing and recycle their waste, we can't expect them to queue for an up to an hour to do it.
The current opening hours are:
Monday to Saturday: 7.30am to 4.30pm
Sunday: 8.30am to 4pm
Monday to Friday: 8am to 4pm
Saturday: 9am to 2pm
Sunday: 9am to 1pm
Monday to Sunday: 8am to 3.30pm
We are suggesting that from May to October, the opening hours should be:
Monday to Saturday: 8am to 8pm
Sunday: 8am to 4pm
