Time for the Council to keep its promise to the Monks Hill Over 50s Club
19/05/2015 12:49:00

Gavin Barwell, newly re-elected Member of Parliament for Croydon Central, is calling on Croydon Council Leader Cllr Tony Newman to honour his promise to allow the Monks Hill Over 50s club access to a brand new local community centre.

The Club’s previous home in the Edgecoombe Community Centre was closed in 2012 and a new facility constructed next to The Quest Academy, Selsdon. The new centre was completed in October 2014.

On 15th April Labour’s candidate at the General Election, Sarah Jones, announced at a Monks Hill election hustings that Croydon’s Labour Council would be opening the venue on 25th April and giving the Over 50s club access to the facilities.

At a Council meeting on 20th April Croydon Council Leader Cllr Tony Newman repeated the pledge that the facility would be open for residents on 25th April. Despite these assurances, to date the Monks Hill Over 50s Club has been refused access to the new centre.

Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central said: “The Labour election candidate and Council Leader made a series of clear and binding promises that the Monks Hill Over 50s Club would have the keys to their new building on 25th April. That date has come and gone and this important local group has been left out in the cold by our Labour Council.

“It is simply not right. All my residents want is to be able to use the facilities that have been built for them. Why is that promise so hard to deliver?

“I’ll be meeting with the Chief Executive of Croydon Council this Friday and seeking an urgent explanation as to when the Council will be allowing the Monks Hill community to use the facilities that have been built for them.”
