First signs of Croydon Labour trying to distance themselves from Ed Miliband
06/01/2015 14:51:00

Last night, Coulsdon & Purley Debating Society hosted a debate between Chris Philp and Emily Benn, the Conservative and Labour candidates for the Croydon South constituency.

You can read a typically acidic account on the Inside Croydon website here, but there was one quote that stood out to me. Emily told the audience:

“It is not Ed Balls or Ed Miliband who is on your ballot paper. It is Emily Benn who is on your ballot paper”.

This is both true in a literal sense, but also misleading because a vote for Emily is a vote for Ed Miliband to be Prime Minister and for Ed Balls to be Chancellor. I know from hundreds of conversations over the last few months that many life-long Labour voters are wrestling with this dilemma so I can see why Emily is trying to distance herself from the national leadership of her party. Sadly for her, however, she is saddled with them.

I wonder if my Labour opponent will try the same trick?
